Update 9 September 2010
Thank you for the 2,877 signatures so far on CSW’s Inclusive India petition! We’re aiming to hit the 5,000 mark to encourage the Indian Government to make improvements to the Communal Violence Bill, strengthening the way religiously-motivated violence is dealt with and its victims helped.
Although a pioneering Bill which is welcomed in principle, it needs considerable improvement. Supporting recommendations from the UN’s former Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, CSW has also called on the Indian Government to modify significant problem areas in the legislation. The Bill has now gone for redrafting in consultation with religious minorities – a great step forward. In these final two weeks of CSW’s petition you can help ensure these recommendations aren’t forgotten.
Please pray
- the Bill’s redrafting process leads to a strong and effective piece of legislation
- that the Inclusive India petition would add momentum
- for victims of religiously-motivated violence, including in Orissa
- that India, as a regional and global influencer, would seek to set a good example in dealing with religiously-motivated violence
- thank God that the Indian authorities are heeding UN recommendations
