“They have asked us to vacate immediately and if we refuse, police force will be used”
As an EU delegation visits Orissa at the start of February to see the scale of the devastation firsthand, the authorities have ordered over 90 victims to leave their temporary shelter in a market place, in an effort to show that normality has returned. Many victims cannot return to their villages unless they convert to Hinduism.
They are just a fraction of those still reeling from the aftermath of the violence...
- 5,500 families’ houses were damaged or destroyed.
- 1,200 families have move from their villages or left the area altogether.
- 4,400 families continue to live in tents, makeshift shelters or the remains of their damaged houses.
- 200-300 families are living in private “displacement camps”. |
What can you do?
